Mysterious hacking group Careto was run by the Spanish government, sources say
According to recent reports from various sources, the mysterious hacking group known as “Careto” or “The Mask” was operated by the Spanish government. This group, active since at least 2007, mainly targeted the Cuban government but also attacked organizations in around 30 other countries. While Kaspersky’s 2014 report identified the malware, it did not officially name Spain as the source due to a policy against attributing attacks to specific governments. Neither the Spanish Ministry of Defense nor the Cuban government has commented on these claims.
